slide6AUNT BETSY, the slave who cared for the Rankin House and the Rankin family was a beloved personality often referenced in the history of the Rankin’s and the home.

The original kitchen was separated from the house where Aunt Betsy prepared all meals over fireplace flame.

When Union soldiers transcended onto Rankin property during the Battle of Asheville it is told that Aunt Betsy hid a Rankin family pocket watch from the soldiers as they looted the property.
